The Five Biggest Sports Trophies in the World

Whether you're cheering on the Wallabies, watching the Ashes, or waking up at 3am to catch the Champions League, as Aussies we love our sport. And with sport comes silverware — trophies that symbolise victory, history, and sometimes sheer excess.

But not all trophies are made equal. Some are massive, both in size and significance. Let’s take a look at five of the biggest and boldest sports trophies on the planet — and how they compare to our own beloved silverware down under.

1. 🏈 The College Football Playoff National Championship Trophy (USA)
Height: 91 cm

Weight: 10 kg

Material: 24-karat gold, stainless steel

This modern marvel represents the pinnacle of college football in the United States. It's sleek, gold-plated, and big enough to need its own seat on a flight. There's no denying this trophy is an absolute unit. Interestinly, the most recent trophy was dropped and broken by US Vice President JD Vance at the White House.

2. ⚽ FIFA World Cup Trophy
Height: 36.8 cm

Weight: 6.1 kg

Material: Solid 18-karat gold

It’s not the biggest on this list by size, but it’s easily the most iconic. Every four years, billions watch as football’s best battle for this golden prize. Interestingly due to its value, the winners don’t get to keep the original — they get a gold-plated replica instead.

3. 🏆 The Stanley Cup (NHL, Canada/USA)
Height: 89.5 cm

Weight: 15.5 kg

Material: Silver and nickel alloy

One of the largest and most unique trophies in sport, the Stanley Cup grows every year — literally. It's bearly liftable now but each winning team's roster is engraved on it, so it continues to be expanded.

4. 🏇 The Melbourne Cup (Australia)
Height: 65 cm (including base)

Weight: 4.4 kg

Material: 1.65 kg of solid gold

We couldn’t leave out the Race That Stops a Nation. The Melbourne Cup is not only one of the most prestigious trophies in horse racing — it’s also Australia’s most valuable, worth over $275,000. And with its unmistakable three-handled design, it’s as Aussie as it gets.

5. 🏉 The Webb Ellis Cup (Rugby World Cup)
Height: 38 cm

Weight: 4.5 kg

Material: Silver gilt

The holy grail of rugby union. Named after the sport’s alleged inventor, the Webb Ellis Cup has been lifted twice by the Wallabies — in 1991 and 1999. With France hosting in 2023 and Australia set to host in 2027, this trophy might make a triumphant return to Aussie hands soon, maybe....

🥇 Honorable Mentions
Ashes Urn – Tiny but mighty; just 11 cm tall, yet probably the one that means the most to Aussie fans.

America’s Cup – At 1.1 metres tall, it's massive — and we won it in 1983 with the legendary Australia II.

The Europa League trophy - Coming in at 65cm and weigihing 15kgs this was of course one recently by our very own Ange Postecoglou and his Spurs team. Interestingly, they were a few short of winners medals (of course this would never have happened if Kingston Trophies were supplying!):

Final Whistle: Size Isn’t Everything… But It’s Fun to Compare

While some trophies are impressive for their size, others (like our beloved Ashes urn) are small but packed with passion and history. Whether it's the scale of the Stanley Cup or the sparkle of the FIFA World Cup, these trophies remind us why we love sport — the drama, the glory, and that moment of triumph.
